Get to Know Us

Hartly Elementary School is one of seven elementary schools in the Capital School District.  It is located in rural Kent County, 15 miles west of Dover.  Hartly Elementary School provides a safe and nurturing environment for just under 400 students in preschool through fourth grade.

Hartly Elementary School boasts a reputation for excellence! Our faculty and staff are devoted to our students and families, determined to be a part of each student's success. To visit the Department of Education website and our profile click here: Hartly Elementary School Profile.

We take pride in our learning community, which includes students, parents/guardians, community members, teachers, para professionals, office staff, cafeteria staff, transportation staff, custodial staff, our guidance counselor, school nurse, foster grandparents, volunteers and more.

Our School Success Team is responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of our School Success Plan.

This plan is based on the Capital School District's vision and mission statements, as well as specific goals that are identified through testing, data collection and recommendations made by staff, parents, and community members.  In the plan, measurable goals and objectives for student achievement are outlined, as well as, the activities we use to meet them.

We have many exemplary programs for our students at Hartly Elementary School.

They include:

Go Math! combines fresh teaching methods and strategies needed to address the rigors of new standards and assessments. The new Standards Practice Book, packaged with the Student Edition, help students achieve mathematical fluency, speed, and confidence with grade-level concepts.

A well rounded reading program meets the needs of all!
Using the Reading Wonders' reading series, effective reading strategies are taught. An emphasis is placed on phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, comprehension, and fluency.  The computerized Accelerated Reader program is also used as an independent reading component.  Response to Intervention (RTI) is important to supporting student access to learning that leads to success.

Writing Across the Curriculum: Our students write in all subject areas.  They are taught to write in three discourses (purposes): Persuasive, Informative, and Expressive.  Students write in response to text they have read on a daily basis.

The Handwriting Without Tears program is used to teach manuscript and cursive writing.

Hands on Science through FOSS (Full Option Science System) and STC (Science and Technology for Children) science kits includes many wonderful experiments in the the areas of inquiry science, physical science, Earth science and life science.

Social Studies curriculum includes activities to increase student knowledge in the areas of geography, economics, civics and history.

Special Programs

Special Education programs/placements are developed and implemented as interventions to meet the specific and unique needs of our students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans).

Our gifted and talented students are served through our district's ACT (Accelerated Curriculum and Technology) and ALPHA programs.

PBS (Positive Behavior Support)
Through a school wide PBS initiative we are able to provide instruction on the universal expectations to our students. We teach the desired behaviors and look for opportunities to acknowledge students who practice those behaviors.

We believe that the more the school and family are joined as partners in education, the greater our children's chances for success. Therefore, we value the partnerships we build between home & school and work hard to maintain them.  Our parents/guardians and teachers work as partners through ongoing communication, clear expectations, shared responsibilities, membership and participation in Hartly's PTF and School Volunteer Program. Parents, teachers and community members also serve on our School Success Team and District Parent Advisory Councils.
